The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning for the metropolitan area Friday morning.

The warning will be in effect until 10 p.m. Sunday.

There had previously been a heat advisory for the city, but it was upgraded to an excessive heat warning. The NWS explained that an excessive heat warning is issued when it expects the heat index to be above 105 degrees.

Both Friday and Saturday will have high heat indexes of 106 degrees, the NWS predicts. The high temperature Saturday is expected to be 94 degrees, but temperatures will feel into the triple digits.

The high temperature on Sunday is expected to be 92 degrees with a heat index of 101 degrees, the NWS said.

The NWS also said there is a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorm Friday afternoon and evening.
