SI has capacity for better transit
Re "The little SI train that could," May 19: Public transportation is a wonderful invention. The Staten Island Railway is now being appreciated because of rising fuel prices.
Unfortunately, there was a time when there was a second line in Staten Island that was not sufficiently appreciated. There is an abandoned track running from the Staten Island Ferry Terminal all the way across the north shore of the island, along the Kill Van Kull.
This line was part of the Staten Island Rapid Transit system. It ran until 1953, when it was abandoned by its owner, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.
This forgotten rail line is waiting to be reopened. Furthermore, a bridge over the Kill Van Kull could connect it to existing lines in Bayonne, which in turn could lead directly to Manhattan. A bridge across the Arthur Kill to Elizabeth already exists.
