Stories like this colorful one should appear in hard copy, too -- at a time when crime and entertainment news dominate, it gives us a much needed pause to connect past with present. And makes us think, which very little of the news does these days!

Unfortunately all this serves as an illustration of the old maxim that L.A. people by and large care little about the city's history. And talk about obscure--I wonder how many former city council members and supervisors Angelenos can name? But in our defense, perhaps there have been some spectacularly unremarkable people in these offices. We haven't had many LaGuardias or Daleys in our midst.
