Ellis Henican
Bio
Ellis Henican is a staff columnist for Newsday, a political analyst at the Fox News Channel and co-host of “Henican & White,” the afternoon-drive show on WOR Radio. He is also the voice of “Stormy Waters” on the prime-time Cartoon Network series, Sealab 2021.
Henican’s award-winning newspaper column -- a personal, opinionated look at the news of the day – appears in the paper’s front section every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Working from the Manhattan newsroom, he specializes in finding the human angle inside the news. His work puts him in the middle of politics, business, crime, race, entertainment and some pretty outrageous tabloid silliness. Before taking on his current assignment, Henican wrote Newsday’s subway column, leading the paper to a Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the Union Square train wreck.
At Fox, Henican appears frequently on “The O’Reilly Factor,” “Hannity & Colmes,” “Fox & Friends” and many of the network’s other programs. He also fills in as a guest host. Fox viewers know Henican for his lively take on the news and for dissecting complex issues in an engaging, understandable way.
Every afternoon, he turns his attention to radio. He and broadcaster Lynne White host “Henican & White” on WOR/710 in New York. Through the WOR Radio Network, the show is syndicated to stations across the country. Listeners tune in for a loose exchange of opinion and a fast-paced romp through the news of the moment. The hosts spar with each other, interview top newsmakers and take listener calls.
Henican’s articles have been published in various national magazines including The New Republic, Cosmopolitan and Penthouse. He has ghost-written two books for Simon & Schuster -- an inside account of the nation’s largest drug-treatment program and a best-selling motivational business book. He lectures frequently.
His work has been recognized with the Meyer Berger Award for Distinguished Writing About New York City, the National Clarion Award for Column Writing and shares of two Pulitzer Prizes for spot news.
Born in Virginia and raised in New Orleans, Henican graduated from Jesuit High School. He has a bachelor’s
degree in political science from Hampshire College. He has a master’s degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, where he won the top student prize, the Pulitzer Traveling Fellowship. He began his career as a reporter at the Kentucky Post and the Albany (N.Y.) Knickerbocker News. He joined Newsday as a general-assignment reporter in 1985.
Henican lives in downtown Manhattan with his wife, attorney Stephanie Carvlin.
