The (sub)way to her heart

With the subway fare hike now in full effect, the cheapest place in the city to meet someone has now gotten more costly. But what about those hoping to meet the commuter of their dreams on a random train ride? Well, then it's time to perfect those subway pick-up skills to get your money's worth.

Let's start now: You want to meet someone on the train? Then look up from you book. Now. Good. Did you see her? Across the way, looking back at you. Did your eyes meet in that awkward subway way? Nice. Then look back down at your book. You made solid first contact; now play it cool. You're really into this book you're reading.

Now look back up. Hold it this time. Maintain eye contact and throw out a little smile. Count out two seconds. One, two. OK, that's enough! You don't want to come on too strong and scare her off. Now it's time for your big move. Go over and say hello. Ask her what she's reading or listening to on her iPod and proceed with the small talk.

Because here's a little secret I'm going to let you in on. Everyone on the subway wants to be talked to. They may act like they don't want to be bothered, but, trust me, inside they are really hoping and praying that they will be. So don't be shy.

As my friend Virginia puts it, "When you're on the subway, you're bored. It's fun to watch strangers and wonder what they're like. And maybe even talk to them."

We've all had that fantasy of being on a crowded subway train and then feeling someone brush against your back. You turn around and lock eyes with the most beautiful strap-hanger you've ever seen. The connection is instant and you ride off into the sunset somewhere at the end of the line.

It's a beautiful vision. And one that seems so plausible. So with the masses of riders packed on the train every single day, we're left with a very dynamic subway situation. One that is ripe for the picking.

So, don't be scared; go approach that day-hiker holding the pole, and see if she'd like to get a drink. After all, with continued fare increases, it's almost cheaper than taking another ride together.
