President Donald Trump, in a series of tweets Thursday morning, said it was “sad” and “foolish” that monuments of Confederate generals were being taken down.
The tweets follow sharp criticism of the president’s response to a deadly riot led by white supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia, where a statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee is set to be removed.
During the riot on Saturday, a woman was killed when an alleged white nationalist drove his car into counter-protesters.
The president insisted that blame was deserved on both sides for the violence and was critical of the efforts in several states to remove statues honoring Confederate leaders.
“Sad to see the history and culture of our great country being ripped apart,” he wrote in one of the recent tweets.
