President Donald Trump repeatedly called for NFL players to be fired or suspended if they do not stand during the singing of the national anthem in a series of tweets over the weekend.
“If a player wants the privilege of making millions of dollars in the NFL,or other leagues, he or she should not be allowed to disrespect our Great American Flag (or Country) and should stand for the National Anthem. If not, YOU'RE FIRED. Find something else to do!” he wrote.
Players on several teams knelt, linked arms or stayed off the field during the national anthem at Sunday’s games in response to the president’s statements.
Trump maintained his position through the weekend and on Monday morning tweeted, “The issue of kneeling has nothing to do with race. It is about respect for our Country, Flag and National Anthem. NFL must respect this!
