President Donald Trump called the appointment of a special counsel to lead the investigation into Russia’s influence in the election, and his campaign’s possible involvement, “the single greatest witch hunt” in U.S. history in a tweet on Thursday.
The day before, the Justice Department announced the appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller to lead the investigation. In a statement after the announcement, Trump said the “thorough investigation will confirm what we already know — there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity," but his tweet Thursday made clear he was not happy with the appointment.
In another tweet, he accused former President Barack Obama and former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton of “illegal acts” without specifying what he was referring to.
