Sandy Alderson – fresh off being named the best GM in baseball by New York Magazine – still has some work to do. 1. Eric Young Jr., LF 2. Daniel Murphy, 2B 3....

If nothing else, it's greatness by contrast.

Compared to his predecessor, Omar Minaya, current Mets GM Sandy Alderson has been a miracle worker. He's turned expensive soon-to-be free agents into valuable, controllable prospects and has even spent a little bit of money this winter, on (largely) sensible deals.

For the first time since 2008, the Mets are truly on the verge of contention...

They were considered aces in the making.

Phil Hughes was ranked the No. 4 prospect in the game by Baseball America before the 2007 season, a near-certain pillar of Yankees rotations for years to come.

Mike Pelfrey was rated the No. 20 prospect in the game by Baseball America that same year, and it appeared just a matter of time before he was leading a promising Mets squad to multiple...

Wally Backman to remain Mets' Triple-A manager

Former Mets' second baseman Wally Backman says he's

Wally Backman will return next season to manage Triple-A Las Vegas, the club announced on Tuesday. Last season, Backman guided the Mets' top minor league affiliate to an 81-63 record, good enough to win a division title. Backman's future with the Mets had been in doubt. He has long aspired to manage in the big leagues, though that chance may not come with the Mets in the near future. At the end...

David Wright can do just about anything.

The Mets captain can hit for average and power. He has a great eye at the plate. He's even become a decent fielder at third base.

But we now know one thing he can't do: Sing.

Wright, Matt Harvey, Lucas Duda, Justin Turner (because of course Justin Turner is involved) and several other Mets were filmed singing and wishing fans a happy holiday....

(Credit: AP)

Outfielder Chris Young has agreed to a one-year deal with the Mets pending a physical, Newsday has confirmed.
