Summer art outdoors
There are several places to wander among remarkable art works in the great outdoors. Here are several.
Well-Lit Chess Pieces. Well-Lit Chess Pieces is a two-part public art project of 11 life-sized chess pieces and 26 rainbow-colored park light lampshades displayed throughout the four corner entrances of Washington Square Park. Isamu Noguchi Museum. Reopened in June 2004 after a major renovation, the sculpture garden shows off the sculptors' work. The outdoor sculpture garden has 24,000 square feet of display space dotted with works in stone, wood, and metal. (9-01 33rd Rd. at Vernon Blvd., Long Island City; (718) 204-7088; www.noguchi.org)
Socrates Sculpture Park. In addition to the installations on display, the park sponsors an International Film Festival this summer (July 6 - August 31, Wednesdays). There is regional cuisine from neighborhood restaurants and performances by local musicians and dancers before the movie starts. Performances begin at 6 p.m., films begin at sunset. Metropolitan Museum of Art. Sol LeWitt on the Roof: Splotches, Whirls and Twirls is the attraction this summer at the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden. The artist has created large-scale, painted fiberglass works in undulating shapes and vibrant colors to complement the natural hues of Central Park. Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition 25th Anniversary Art shows. The spring art show takes place at the Pier (499 Van Brunt, B'klyn; May 7 June 18). The Earth Art Show is also at the Pier (July 16 Aug. 20). The Annual Outdoor Sculpture show takes place in Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park. (Aug. 13 Oct. 7); 718-802-9254; www.bwac.org)
Pratt Institute. Dotted throughout the campus in the historic Clinton section of Brooklyn are examples of cutting-edge sculpture. (200 Willoughby Avenue; 718-636-3600; www.pratt.edu)
