Michelle Obama snubs green scene

Michelle Obama may have worn green, but her carefully crafted convention speech left out even a single mention of the environment.

It was her opportunity to introduce her husband as a caring father, concerned about the future for his children and the children of America.

But no mention of clear air to breathe or clean water to drink.

It was her opportunity to persuade women voters that Barack cares about issues that concern them — health care, equal pay for equal work.

What about safe, healthy food to eat?

Their daughters were highlighted several times, but she did not discuss Malia’s asthma and the link between the growing rate of respiratory ailments and air pollution.

(continued) It was her opportunity to address her own patriotism. She could have gone with the mantra that green is the new red, white and blue.

She said Barack Obama would end the war in Iraq “responsibly” — whatever that means — but nothing about ensuring that we decrease our reliance on foreign oil and invest in clean, renewable technologies. And nothing about the global threat of climate instability.

She talked about standing up for military families and providing services to returning military personnel. But no mention of green-collar jobs — jobs that could allow those who protect and serve, to protect our environment.

She talked about their faith but no mention of stewardship of the earth.

Ultimately, the only thing green about Michelle last night was the color of her outfit. And it probably wasn’t even made from sustainable or organic materials.
