Political chatter from DC and NYC, the amNewYork way

Gridlock We Can Believe In: Meg Hearts D.C.

I have such a crush on the D.C. Metro system. It's so user-friendly. And I always get a seat. And it's so clean! I mean, carpet!

The museums are closed Tuesday so I decided to slap the Smithsonian around a couple of times Monday. We did Air and Space, the Hirchhorn, the Freer and the Portrait Gallery. And boy, are my feet tired. You couldn't get anywhere near the American History and the Archives...

Gridlock We Can Believe In: Manifesting Hope

(Credit: Politirazzi)

Sunday night, my friend Jenny and I went to Manifest Hope:DC at a gallery in Georgetown. The gallery, in its own words, "shines a spotlight on artists who use their voices to amplify and motivate the grassroots movement that carried President-Elect Barack Obama to victory." In other words: Two huge rooms of art, all devoted to Obama.

Aside from one kinda creepy Barack-as-Lincoln portrait,...

Rahm-bo's shocker

(Credit: Politirazzi)

The New York Times magazine portraits are gorgeous, but it appears that President-elect Barack Obama's chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, is putting up the shocker. An etiquette no-no, indeed. Do you think he know-knows?

Addendum: My dear word, it appears poor Rahm's finger is partially amputated. I should have believed the rumors.

Eight years of Dubya: From the recount to Iraq

(Credit: Politirazzi)

By Emily Ngo

It seems few Americans are sad to see Dubya go.

President George W. Bush’s approval rating hovers at 34 percent — the lowest rate since Richard Nixon’s presidency. Experts, however, warn against “misunderestimating” how he’ll be remembered.

“History may cut him some slack,” said political analyst Costas Panagopoulos,...

Eager to witness history and slightly desperate for a break from NY (I love you, NY, but you're bringing me down), I decided to travel to our nation's capital for the Inauguration of Barack Obama. I'm going to try to bring as much of it to you, dear Politirazzi, as I can.

The adventure began last night when I drove into the District around 2 a.m. and...

Hillary (somewhat) in the hot seat

Hillary Clinton could be confirmed as early as Thursday and sworn in as early as Inauguration Day as President-elect Barack Obama's secretary of state.

By Emily Ngo

Hillary Clinton, currently the junior New York senator and hopefully the next secretary of state, faced more-mild-than-expected questioning over husband Bill's global foundation Tuesday at her confirmation hearings....

A secretary of the arts?

Other countries have had ministers of art or culture for centuries, music mogul Quincy Jones has asked: Why not the United States?

It doesn't seem like he's behind this petition to form a secretary the arts position in President-elect Barack Obama's Cabinet, but apparently others agree with the need.

Who are your suggestions should the position be formed?

One for the porn biz

Meg will now entertain herself (and possibly only herself) with her assessment of the latest American institution's plea for federal help:

Looks like the world of pornography has gone a little limp.

Apparently, this is an industry that has not seen much growth lately.

Many Americans may think a bailout isn't necessary, but those in the know realize that Hustler, like AIG, is just...

An ice cream for the Dem team

Ben & Jerry's has discerned that the world doesn't quite have enough T-shirts, hats, calenders, beer, everything inspired by President-elect Barack Obama. It has rectified the situation:

The Web site doesn't state the flavor is named specifically for Obama, but "Yes Pecan"? Come on now.
