Burglary at Nassau GOP headquarters

Nassau Republican headquarters in Westbury was broken into last  week sometime between 10 p.m. Thursday and  8 a.m. Friday.  But insiders say the incident was more of a smash-and-grab than another Watergate.

Nassau County police report that somebody kicked in a second-floor window of the headquarters building on Post Avenue and took five computer towers and four computer screens. The break-in was discovered Friday morning and a police report was filed.

Republican spokesman Anthony Santino declined to comment.

Several people with knowledge the break-in dismissed speculation about political dirty tricks, saying the incident appeared to be a crime of opportunity with the burglar apparently looking for something to sell or pawn.

In comparison, the scandal that followed the 1972 break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Washington D.C. led to the eventual resignation of Republican President Richard Nixon.
