Suffolk Democrats begin to mull legislative leadership
Suffolk’s Democratic legislative caucus met for the first time this week with party chairman Richard Schaffer to begin weighing who will be legislature’s next presiding officer.
No decisions were reached at the meeting held at a restaurant in Riverhead after Tuesday’s county legislature session, according to several sources, but almost everyone in the caucus — save newly elected Monica Martinez and Dr. William Spencer, expressed interest in at least one of the three leadership posts up for grabs.
Among those seeking the top spot are Legis. DuWayne Gregory, Louis D’Amaro, and Jay Schneiderman but the caucus also has to fill the posts of deputy presiding officer and majority leader.
Schaffer, according to sources, urged those interested in leadership spots to speak to other lawmakers and said neither he nor the county executive should play a role. He also emphasized that whoever is elected should work together as a team to keep the cacus united. The caucus will meet again Dec. 20.
