Yankees to make room for Rasner on roster

Article tools

The Yankees have to make a roster move to create room for Darrell Rasner this morning. Ian Kennedy doesn't think he's going to be going down to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. "No, I don't think so," the rookie righthander said. "Shouldn't be."

Kennedy, 0-2 with an 8.37 ERA in six games (five starts), said he hadn't been told anything about his next assignment. He threw a bullpen session yesterday in preparation for something. He's just not sure what.

General manager Brian Cashman said the Yankees will wait until today to announce the roster move for Rasner, who is being recalled to start against Seattle in place of the injured Phil Hughes.

The Yankees have no shortage of relievers with options left who could go down for Rasner, including Chris Britton, Jonathan Albaladejo, Edwar Ramirez and Jose Veras.

As for Kennedy's next appearance, Joe Girardi said the team's decision-makers still are discussing how to handle the rotation. Because there is a day off tomorrow, they could skip Kennedy and go four-man or stay with five and give everyone an extra day off. "We're going to toy with some things," he said. "We still haven't made our decision ... We have a day off, which allows us to be a little creative."

Wang OK

Chien-Ming Wang felt OK yesterday after suffering a cramp in his pitching hand in Friday's start. "He said he's fine," Girardi said. "I don't see it being an issue."

Extra bases

With his 254th win, Mike Mussina passed Hall of Famer Carl Hubbell on the career list and tied Jack Morris and Hall of Famer Red Faber for 39th place ... Jose Molina snapped an 0-for-23 slide with a sixth-inning single. Robinson Cano (.150) returned to the lineup after a night off and went 0-for-3 with an intentional walk. Jason Giambi (.154) went 0-for-3 with a walk ... Kyle Farnsworth had a huge stuffed and mounted turkey in front of his locker. He plans to ship it home ... The Yankees are 14-6 in games started by Wang, Mussina and Andy Pettitte and 2-10 in games in which Hughes and Kennedy have appeared.
