Feb. 6, 1921
Yanks purchase 10 acres of land in the Bronx from the estate of William Waldorf Astor for $675,000.

April 18, 1923
Inaugural game at newly completed stadium, Yanks vs. Boston Red Sox. Yanks win 4-1.

1937
The grandstand is expanded and wooden bleachers are replaced by a concrete structure.

June 13, 1948
Babe Ruth makes his final appearance at the stadium.

1961
Roger Maris beats Babe Ruth's single-season home run record by hitting his 61st at Yankee Stadium.

1973
After signing a 30-year lease with the city, Yanks move to Shea Stadium for two seasons so that a major renovation of Yankee stadium can be completed.

1977-78
Yanks win back to back World Series titles the first of several championships under George's watch.

April 13, 1998
A 500-pound steel expansion joint comes crashing down on empty seats while the stadium is closed. Other concrete sections are found to be flimsy.

April 5, 2006
The City Council votes overwhelmingly in favor of allowing Yanks to build a new stadium.
