Mets 2015 season: What changed?

  • The Mets played the Nationals, Braves, Phillies and Marlins during their hot stretch. Those teams are a combined 67-78 this season, a .462 winning percentage. Since the struggles began, the Mets opponents have been the Yankees, Marlins, Nationals, Orioles, Phillies and Cubs. Those teams are a combined 103-106 this season, a .492 winning percentage.

  • The Mets scored an average of 4.5 runs per game and allowed 2.9 runs per game during their scorching start. They scored five or more runs eight times and allowed two or fewer runs in seven games. In their last 19 games, the Mets have scored an average of 3 runs per game and allowed 3.4. They scored five or more runs four times and allowed two or fewer runs in nine games.

  • When the Mets were winning, Daniel Murphy was struggling, batting .170 with a .250 OBP and .283 slugging percentage through April 23. While the team has struggled, however, Murphy has gotten hot, hitting .310 with a .338 OBP and .423 slugging percentage.

  • Offseason import Michael Cuddyer hit .273 with a .355 OBP through April 23. Hes hitting .200 with a .246 OBP since then.

  • Reliever Carlos Torres had scoreless outings in seven of his eight appearances through April 23. During that span he racked up four holds and struck out seven and walked none in 6 1/3 innings. During the Mets rough stretch, Torres is 1-2 with a blown save and three holds and has struck out four and walked three in 7 1/3 innings.

The Mets began the 2015 season on a 13-3 roll that included a franchise record-tying 11 straight wins from April 12 to April 23. Since then, the Mets are 7-12 and their lead in the NL East has shrunk from 4.5 games to 1.5 games as of May 15. What changed?
