Summary: The Mets, with Oliver Perez pitching on short rest, fell behind in the sixth inning when the Marlins scored twice to take a 2-0 lead during a pitcher's duel with the marlins' Scott Olsen. Carlos Beltran, however, clubbed a dramatic home run to tie it in the bottom of the inning. In the eighth inning, Scott Schoeneweis gave up a solo homer to pinch-hitter Wes Helms and Luis Ayala followed by giving up a solo homer to Dan Uggla. The Mets could not score in either of their final two at-bats and were left out of the playoff picture and eliminated on the final day for the second straight year. Almost simultaneously, the Brewers -- with help from a late home run by Ryan Braun -- defeated the Cubs and therefore won the NL wild card. The Mets "celebrated" the last game at Shea Stadium in a ceremony after the game.
Key stat: The Mets were held to four hits in their final game of the season.
