'Star Trek' trailer, or why J.J. Abrams is awesome

It's been a while since since Star Trek has been worth paying attention. Pretty much since "Deep Space Nine" ended, it's been a series of mediocre television shows ("Voyager" and "Enterprise") and a bad movie ("Nemesis"). This new film, which takes the series back to its beginnings, looks pretty damn good.Judging movies by their trailers review

Star Trek opening May 8, 2009. Directed by J.J. Abrams. Starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Eric Bana, Simon Pegg, Winona Ryder, Karl Urban, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Anton Yelchin, Leonard Nimoy and, disappointingly, not William Shatner.

Loose plot: Space... the Final Frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before. But when they were all younger.

This trailer does a good job of establishing the characters of James T. Kirk (Pine) and Spock (Quinto) for a new generation. It's got fast cars, space ships and a woman taking off her shirt, so it will certainly appeal to the kids, the Trekkies and the fanboys. It also gives glimpses of all the crew, from Sulu, to Scotty, to Uhuru. It also shows a pretty ridiculous looking villain. But the one thing that bothers me about the trailer is that Kirk's dialogue is delivered cleanly, not in his traditional staggered fashion. Plus, it would have been nice to hear more of the original score. Overall, it's a pretty good trailer and I'm throughly engaged.* 3.5 stars out of 4.

* Yes, that is a "Star Trek" pun, but for "Next Generation," not the original show. I am a huge nerd.
