Talk Back: The new "Charlie"

From Newsday

Tim Burton's version of Roald Dahl's classic, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," stars an exceptionally eccentric Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka, the role famously played by Gene Wilder in the 1971 movie. What are your thoughts on Hollywood's latest re-do?

Nobody could top this Wonka nor the great connection between Wonka and Charlie that was so sorely lacking in Wilder's version. And the allusion to Ed Wood with the pink sheep! To die for. I've seen it 4 times in theatres and can't wait to own it.

I thought that Johnny Depp was a great Willy Wonka and made the role his own. It was very different from the original but in it's own interesting way. I would definately see it again and can't wait to buy the DVD!! ****

I think it is ridiculous that people are taking harmless and hilarious fun, into something bad. I mean this has nothing to do with michael jackson. I mean his character was so quirky and funny.

I agree with #5. I love Johnny Depp, but I hate what he did with this role. He never quite determined what the character was supposed to represent. It was scary mishmash.

This movie was great! Although different in many ways from the original, the actors were fantastic, the oompa loompas were hysterical, and the movie overall is going to be a huge hit. **** 4 stars in my book

This is not a "remake" but a "restatement". And even though you know from the start what the ending is going to be, it is a wonderfully entertaining ride getting to the end. Seeing how the 4 brats each meet thier elimination from the big prize is wonderfully inventive. 3.5 of 4 *

Johnny Depp is far too bizarre in this movie. At times it was painful to watch. The special effects and remainder of the cast save the movie which is entertaining
