On June 20, 2003, Miguel Cabrera made his major league debut with the Florida Marlins and hit a game-winning home run, igniting a career that through four and a half seasons rivals that of some of baseball's all-time greats. Through 2007 Cabrera has totaled 123 homers and 523 RBI, all with the Florida Marlins. According to baseball-reference.com, the ten most most statistically similar players to Cabrera so far are Hank Aaron, Ken Griffey, Frank Robinson, Orlando Cepeda, Hal Trotsky, Joe Medwick, Al Kaline, Mickey Mantle, Andruw Jones and Vladimir Guerrero. Cabrera, who turned 24 on April 18, 2007, already can boast four All-Star selections, two Silver Slugger awards, and a runner-up finish in the 2006 National League batting race. Since Cabrera's promotion to the majors the only player with more RBI is St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols (544). As a rookie in 2003, Cabrera helped the Florida Marlins win their second World Series championship. A third baseman by trade, Cabrera made the transition to left field and set a rookie record with four homers and 12 RBI in 17 playoff games. Perhaps his most memorable postseason long ball came in Game 4 of the World Series against the New York Yankees. After future Hall of Famer Roger Clemens brushed him back with a fastball, Cabrera sent the next pitch over the right-field wall for an opposite field homer. Before the 2007 season Cabrera was awarded a $7.4 million salary, the highest ever for a first year arbitration-eligible player. In spite of Cabrera's off the chart talent, the financially challenged Marlins traded the superstar during the 2007 offseason as they were unable to keep pace with his escalating salary. Though he hit .320 and established personal bests with 34 homers and 119 RBI in 2007, Cabrera was criticized for letting his weight become an issue. Cabrera's once lean frame is now thick, prompting many pundits to speculate that is the reason for his difficulties on defense. A native of Maracay, Venezuela, Cabrera was a highly sought after amateur. He ultimately signed with the Marlins for a $1.8 million bonus at age 16. Cabrera, who wears No. 24, married his high school sweetheart, Rosangel. The couple has a baby girl also named Rosangel who was born in 2005.
