Known for his candid style, the Venezuelan native has been a source of entertainment and controversy for media members and fans. Guillen started his professional career with the San Diego Padres organization but was traded to the White Sox before the 1985 season. He played 16 major league seasons, the first 13 with the Sox, and compiled a .264 career batting average. He won the 1985 American League Rookie of the Year award and was regarded as one of the best defensive shortstops of his era. Guillen played his final three years with Baltimore (1998), Atlanta (1998-99) and Tampa Bay (2000). He was a third base coach for Montreal in 2001, then was a coach for Florida in 2002 and 2003. Guillen took over as White Sox manager in 2004, admitting he had a hangover while interviewing for the position. He became the first Venezuelan to manage a team in the majors and became the first Latin American manager to win a World Series when the Sox won 11 of 12 postseason games and swept the Houston Astros in the 2005 World Series. Guillen has developed a reputation for letting his starting pitchers work deep into games. He has a 344-304 record as a manager and currently ranks ninth in franchise history for most wins.
