It's only June, but we've already had some scorching days with brilliant sunshine. Soleil Chic's UV hat is made of a tightly woven nylon that designer Lynn Rose claims blocks 97 percent of UVA and UVB rays and is recognized by NASA for its proven sun-protective qualities. The comfortably light bonnet features a 41/2-inch-wide brim and an adjustable chin strap for windy
days.
The hat's Ultraviolet Protection Factor, indicating how effective its fabric blocks out solar ultraviolet radiation, is 50+, a number that suggests excellent protection, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation (although the hat does not carry the organization's Seal of Recommendation). Rose, who lost her husband to skin cancer, is acutely aware of the sun's dangers and advocates the use of sunscreen as well, since rays bounce off water, glass and other surfaces.
