Top skiing day trips from Long Island

Camelback

Camelback ()

Nothing says winter fun than waking up, seeing a snow report and jumping in the car for an afternoon of skiing or riding. Of course, you can't do that on Long Island, unless you like 40-foot runs on the hills in public parks or you're playing a video game at Dave & Buster's.

Long Islanders and New Yorkers have to travel in order to ski or snowboard on real hills.

Here is a look at some of the best day trips from Long Island, considering a four-hour travel radius, traffic on the L.I.E. notwithstanding.

Camelback

This resort in the Poconos features 33 trails and some of the best terrain parks in the region. There is also good shopping nearby if it gets too cold on the slopes. Travel Time: 2 hours

Mountain Creek

Maybe the only mountain you can commute to. There is usually daily bus service from New York City to Mountain Creek so don't be surprised if you see some snowboards on the LIRR when a local storm hits. Mountain Creek is affordable and has just enough diversity to make it an entertaining day.

Travel Time: 90 minutes

Belleayre

It pains me to write this because I don't want to see you all at this hidden gem, but if you make one day trip this year, make it to Belleayre. While most Long Islanders head to Hunter or Windham, Belleayre usually offers better conditions, less crowds and less travel.

Travel Time: 3 hours

Jiminy Peak

If you can't make it to Vermont, but are looking for that Vermont resort atmosphere, then Jiminy Creek is your place. With its quaint slope side village and ample skiing, the largest resort in the Berkshires is worth the trip. Travel Time: 3 hours

Granted, it is tough to make it to Vermont and back in a day, but we've all done it. Or at least dreamed of doing it. Mount Snow in Vermont is worth the trip, although with all the skiing you'll do you may be too tired to drive home. Here is a tip, take the ferry from Port Jeff. After a nice boat ride it is only a three-hour drive. Travel Time: 4 ½ hours.
