More than two dozen ultrabudget bus companies that primarily run routes out of Chinatown have been shut down by safety regulators for being "imminent hazards to public safety," the U.S. Transportation Department said Thursday.

Regulators from the department served the shutdown notices Wednesday for alleged safety violations, including drivers without a valid commercial license and using vehicles not regularly inspected, officials said.

The shutdown focused on three main companies, Apex Bus Inc., I-95 Coach Inc. and New Century Travel Inc., and the smaller companies they oversee. Combined, they transport around 1,800 passengers daily along I-95.

The closures stem from investigations triggered by crashes in New York and New Jersey last year that killed 17 people.
