Andrew Cuomo, Carl Paladino shift focus to Gotham

In the waning days of the election, gubernatorial candidates Andrew Cuomo and Carl Paladino yesterday turned to high-profile events in the city to draw voter enthusiasm.
Cuomo appeared with Bill Clinton at the New York City College of Technology in Brooklyn, where the former president endorsed his fellow Democrat. Cuomo worked at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development during Clinton’s presidency. “Andrew Cuomo is my friend,” Clinton told the crowd. Republican strategist Mike Edelman said Cuomo standing next to Clinton is a good way to excite his base and a better choice than the current president. “Andy Cuomo is not bringing in Obama because he has lost popularity, even in a blue state like New York,” Edelman said. “There’s no downside in bringing Clinton here.” Meanwhile, GOP rival Paladino visited the World Trade Center site. He signed a pledge by the Coalition to Honor Ground Zero, promising he will fight an effort to build a mosque near the site if he becomes governor.
Paladino’s visit to lower Manhattan, however, was merely “showmanship,” Edelman added. “People aren’t interested in [a mosque at] Ground Zero. They’re interested in jobs,” Edelman said. Paladino dismissed a Quinnipiac University poll out yesterday showing Cuomo in a 20-point lead, and attacked the media for failing to be objective.
“They have a real big problem, and they should work on addressing it,” Palladino told WCBS radio. The poll even showed Cuomo winning the support of 19 percent of Republicans surveyed. “That Republican wave that’s said to be sweeping the country runs into a levee ... at the New York border probably because of Carl Paladino’s foot-in-mouth disease,” said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.
