Apple fans can rejoice over reports of a sooner-than-expected iPhone 5 release date.

iMore, a blog dedicated to Apple products, reported news of a rumored Sept. 12 event and subsequent iPhone 5 release date nine days later.

Rene Ritchie, iMore's editor-in-chief, claims the scoop comes from "sources who have proven accurate in the past."

The blog also reports the iPad mini and a new iPod Nano will be announced on that date as well, and speculates the release date of the revamped tablet computer "could be the same as the iPhone 5."

Rumors of the release day began circulating on tech blogs nearly a week ago, but now more news sources, including Reuters and CNN, are picking up on the buzz.

On July 29, a much talked about video uploaded to Youtube by Japanese tech blog Macotakara claims to piece together an early prototype of the iPhone 5.

Some rumored features of the sixth version of the iPhone include a faster processor, a 4-inch Retina display, a much-improved Siri and a smaller dock connector, according to International Business Times.

While some viewed the iPhone 4S as a potentially redundant gadget, Gizmodo's Brian Barett points out that Apple's huge investment increase points to a totally new product.

"You don't spend an extra $1.18 billion on a slightly better camera sensor; you drop that kind of change when you're starting from whole cloth," Barrett writes.

Apple representatives did not return requests for comment.
