  • Autumnal splendor breaks out in the middle of Broadway

Those islands of calm carved into Broadway are an admirable civic touch, although sipping coffee seated in the middle of the street with cabs zipping by just feet away from us does not exactly instill a sense of peace. We know there are bulky planters protecting us from the unthinkable, but we'd rather not try our luck.

The sight of these islands is somewhat surreal, at least to native New Yorkers. So when you add festive autumnal decorations around a traffic signal pole, complete with pumpkins and Indian corn, it truly gets bizarre.

See it at 36th and Broadway.
