Bad news for Mets: Atlanta closing in on deal for star Dempster: Report
The Mets uphill climb in the NL East standings may have gotten a lot steeper Monday.
The Braves agreed to terms with the Chicago Cubs on a trade that would send Cubs ace Ryan Dempster to Atlanta to bolster its pitching ranks for the stretch run, according to published reports.
Dempster is currently only 5-4 for the woeful Cubs. But he has a league-best 2.11 ERA in the last year of a four-year, $52 million contract he signed with the Cubs before the 2009 season.
Dempster is entitled to to approve any trade, and as of Monday evening, he hadn't done that, and tweeted that there was no trade.
But the Braves have long been the rumored destination for the 35-year-old, and a trade appears imminent, according to reports.
