Behind the curtain: Andy Karl steps into the ring to play Rocky Balboa
Andy Karl, who has appeared on Broadway in “The Mystery of Edwin Drood,” “Legally Blonde” and “Jersey Boys,” has scored the plum role of Rocky Balboa in the upcoming Broadway musical version of “Rocky,” which will open at the Winter Garden Theatre in March. Adrian, Rocky’s wife, will be played by Margo Seibert, an unknown.
Feldshuh replaces Martin in ‘Pippin’ permanently
Tovah Feldshuh, who temporarily took over as Berthe in the Broadway revival of “Pippin” while Andrea Martin took a short vacation last month, will take over the role permanently once Martin departs the show on Sept. 22. Martin is set to join the TV series “Working the Engels.”
‘Broadway on Broadway’ unexpectedly called off
Without explanation, the Broadway League revealed this week that the annual “Broadway on Broadway” concert, in which cast members from numerous Broadway musicals perform for free in Times Square, will not take place this year. The concert is typically held on the Sunday after Labor Day. On Thursday, the Broadway League announced that it will instead hold a free concert in lower Manhattan titled “Broadway on the Hudson,” which will be held at lunchtime on Sept. 27 at Brookfield Place Waterfront Plaza. It will feature performances from about a dozen shows.
MTC to produce new Fierstein play on B’way
Harvey Fierstein, whose latest Broadway credits have reflected his work as a librettist (“Kinky Boots”) and a performer (“La Cage aux Folles”), will return to his playwriting roots this spring with “Casa Valentina,” which will be produced on Broadway by the Manhattan Theatre Club. The play explores a group of gay men in the 1960s who went to the Catskills to find a safe haven where they could dress up like women.
Sun won’t come up for ‘Annie’ after January
The Broadway revival of “Annie,” which was highly anticipated but failed to garner much excitement after it opened almost a year ago, will shutter in early January once the lucrative holiday season ends. Over the summer, “Glee” star Jane Lynch took over as Miss Hannigan.
NYC Opera seeking emergency funds
New York City Opera, which will launch its new season next week with “Anna Nicole” at BAM, has launched a campaign to raise $7 million in funds by the end of the month in order to be able to produce the rest of the season, which would include operas by J.C. Bach, Bartok and Mozart. The company also hopes to raise an additional $13 million for next year’s season.
‘Last Five Years’ cast to reunite at 54 Below
Just in case you missed the Off-Broadway revival of Jason Robert Brown’s two-character musical “The Last Five Years,” the entire cast — namely Adam Kantor and Betsy Wolfe — will reunite at 54 Below next month to perform the show in concert for several performances.
