Behind the Curtain: 'Macbeth' with Ethan Hawke on tap for Lincoln Center Theater
Lincoln Center Theater announced a full slate of productions for its upcoming season on Thursday, including a new production of “Macbeth” (which is currently on Broadway in a one-man version with Alan Cumming) starring Ethan Hawke and directed by Jack O’Brien, which will open at the Vivian Beaumont Theater in November. Other productions include “Domesticated,” a new play by Pulitzer winner Bruce Norris featuring Laurie Metcalf; “Act One,” a new play by James Lapine based on Moss Hart’s much loved autobiography of the same title; and “The City of Conversation,” a new drama by playwright-novelist Anthony Giardina.
Taylor’s ‘Ann’ to pack up early
“Ann,” the warmhearted one-woman show written by and starring Holland Taylor as the late Texas governor Ann Richards, will conclude its Broadway run on June 30 rather than Sept. 1, its previously announced closing. No reason was provided for the change, but it’s probably due to the show’s low grosses.
Disney eyeing Muppets stage musical designed for Broadway
As first reported by Variety, Disney produced a test performance of what would be a Muppets stage show designed for Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theatre on May 30. It apparently featured no less than 85 Muppets. Alex Timbers, whose career ranges from edgy fare such as “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson” to “The Pee-wee Herman Show on Broadway,” directed. If you recall, the Muppets already sang and danced on Broadway in the 1984 flick “The Muppets Take Manhattan.”
Errico blogs about being fired from ‘Passion’
Melissa Errico, who left the recent Off-Broadway revival of “Passion” at Classic Stage due to serious vocal problems, and missed the final month of performances, has revealed in a series of lengthy blog posts on her website, melissaerrico.com, that she was officially fired after missing a certain number of those performances. She had hoped she would be able to return. “I was not allowed back,” Errico wrote.
Jackie Chan wants his own bio musical
Jackie Chan is looking to turn his memoir “I Am Jackie Chan: My Life in Action” into a Broadway musical. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the musical would explore Chan’s rise to fame as an actor and martial artist. He is apparently now looking for a director.
‘A Christmas Story’ to play MSG
“A Christmas Story,” which was nominated for best musical and performed at the Tonys, will return to New York this holiday season — but not on Broadway. It will play the Theater at Madison Square Garden from Dec. 11-29. The show, with a score by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, received surprisingly strong reviews and sold out at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre.
