Behind the Curtain: More 'Merrily' screenings
Screenings added for London 'Merrily' revival
The recent London revival of Sondheim's "Merrily We Roll Along," which was originally going to be screened at just a single movie theater in New York on Oct. 23, has proved to be unexpectedly popular. Due to the demand, additional screenings have been added across the city. Might this positive sign of audience interest help pave the way toward a Broadway transfer of the production?
'The Visit' with Chita Rivera looking to move forward
The Kander and Ebb musical "The Visit," which has been produced regionally and slated for a Broadway run for more than a decade, is on the move again. Chita Rivera, who has starred in previous incarnations of the musical, told Playbill.com that it is likely to be produced at the Williamstown Theatre Festival this summer. A Broadway transfer could follow.
Songwriter Brown says '13' movie musical is coming
The preteen musical "13," which played a short run on Broadway in 2008 and is now being performed at middle schools everywhere, will be adapted into a film, songwriter Jason Robert Brown told WBAI Radio in an interview. Brown is a busy guy these days: "Honeymoon in Vegas" premieres this weekend at New Jersey's Paper Mill Playhouse, "The Bridges of Madison County" opens on Broadway later this season and the film version of "The Last Five Years" with Anna Kendrick should come out soon.
Mobile app for discount theater tickets launched
What if the tourists who wait for hours on end on the TKTS Discount Booth line had the option of instantly purchasing discounted tickets through a smart phone app? TodayTix, which was recently launched and can be downloaded through the Apple Store, allows users to purchase tickets for Broadway and Off-Broadway shows at prices comparable to TKTS, but without the long lines. And unlike TKTS, it offers tickets to a week's worth of upcoming performances at any given time.
'Holiday Inn' to be turned into stage musical
The 1942 movie musical "Holiday Inn," which features songs by Irving Berlin such as "Easter Parade" and "Happy Holidays," is set to be turned into a stage musical. It will premiere next year at Goodspeed Musicals in Connecticut. Given that there is already a very popular musical version of the movie musical "White Christmas," which also has Irving Berlin songs and an almost identical plot, putting "Happy Holidays" onstage does seem redundant. Both films also starred Bing Crosby.
