Behind the Curtain: 'Smash' 'Hit' coming to 54 Below
The recently canceled, Broadway-themed television series "Smash" will lead to a staged concert of a fictional musical featured on the show -- just not the one you think. On Dec. 9, 54 Below will present two staged concerts of "Hit List," the rock musical written by Jeremy Jordan's character that competed against the Marilyn Monroe vehicle "Bombshell." It will star Jordan and his "Smash" co-stars Krysta Rodriguez and Andy Mientus. Both concerts sold out an hour after the official announcement on Tuesday morning, making it likely that additional performances will be added.
Gay 'Company' coming from Roundabout?
News leaked this week that the Roundabout Theatre Company is developing a new version of the Stephen Sondheim musical "Company" in which Bobby, the eternal bachelor with commitment fears and mixed feelings about marriage, is reconceived as gay, and the genders of other characters are reversed. The new version, which is being developed by director John Tiffany ("The Glass Menagerie") and Sondheim himself, will receive a closed private reading on Friday with Daniel Evans, Alan Cumming, Bobby Steggert and Michael Urie. For years, Sondheim has adamantly denied all allegations that Bobby, at least in the original version, may be gay.
'On the Town' slated for Broadway revival
A revival of the dance- infused wartime musical comedy "On the Town" is expected to hit Broadway before the end of the current season, as per a casting notice that went out this week. John Rando, who will direct, also staged the musical at City Center Encores! in 2008 and this past summer at Barrington Stage Company. It has not been seen on Broadway since 1997, when a Shakespeare in the Park production transferred and quickly flopped.
Bierko taking leave of absence from 'Matilda'
Craig Bierko, whose start date to take over the role of Miss Trunchbull in the musical "Matilda" was delayed from Sept. 3 to Sept. 17, is now taking a 12-week leave of absence due to a shoulder injury he allegedly sustained while rehearsing for the role and which caused the initial delay. In the meantime, understudies Chris Hoch and Ben Thompson will alternate playing Miss Trunchbull.
'Fuerza Bruta' to close after six-year run
The long-running Off-Broadway aerial spectacle "Fuerza Bruta," which was expected to close last year but got a last-minute reprieve, will finally shutter on Jan. 5 after a popular six- year run. The move raises the possibility that "Here Lies Love," the Public Theater's disco-party-themed musical based on the life of Filipina first lady Imelda Marcos. may take its place.
