Blockbuster Express kiosks bring DVD rentals to Duane Reade
Blockbuster seemed to be fading from the block, but it hopes to boost its New York City presence with DVD kiosks at Duane Reade stores.
There are currently 13 Duane Reades with Blockbuster Express rental kiosks, and NCR, the company that helps maintain the kiosks, announced yesterday it will install more than 200 of them during the next several months.
The kiosks are part of Blockbuster’s strategy to compete with alternative movie delivery services such as Netflix and Redbox.
The movie rental giant recently announced mass store closures to focus more on the new methods of delivery that have changed the industry.
Blockbuster chairman Jim Keyes has touted the coming of the kiosks, saying last month, “We’ll have a presence in Manhattan for the first time.”
He also envisioned the kiosks popping up at banks and building lobbies, in places where the company couldn’t afford the real estate before.
The New York City expansion is part of Blockbuster’s plan to install 2,500 NCR-operated kiosks nationally this year.
The Blockbuster Express kiosks will match Redbox’s pricing: $1 a day.
