Bronx man sentenced for 1986 murder and rape
A 26-year-old cold case was closed Monday when a Manhattan judge sentenced a killer who was done in by DNA evidence.
Steven Carter, 50, of the Bronx, was sentenced to 25 years to life for the 1986 murder and rape of Antoinette Bennett, a 26-year-old mother. Carter was convicted of murder last month after Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance reopened Bennett's case and linked him to DNA evidence at the scene.
"Every victim deserves justice, and we will continue to use every law enforcement tool at our disposal to ensure that cold cases do not become forgotten cases," Vance said.
Bennett's body was discovered in St. Nicholas Park on Nov. 10, 1986. Although investigators found someone's DNA in her body, they didn't have the technology back then to determine who it was.
Vance reopened the murder case two years ago, when he created a new cold case unit at his office, and the DNA was matched to Carter, who was promptly arrested and indicted.
This is the unit's the first conviction, according to Vance.
