Brooklyn man dies in accident at tortilla factory
A Brooklyn man with a young family fell to his death yesterday inside a dough-mixing machine at an East Williamsburg tortilla factory, police said.
Juan Baten, 22, was killed in the bizarre accident about 2:30 a.m. at Tortilleria Chinantla, authorities said. Co-workers reportedly tried to pull Baten out of the waist-high tub, where he was pinned under a motorized blade. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said they don’t suspect criminal activity. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating.
“I’m still in shock,” Batten’s common-law wife, Rosario Ramirez, 23, told the Daily News. “He did everything so we [Ramirez and their 7-month-old daughter] could have a better life.”
Tortilleria Chinantla did not return calls for comment.
