City bill aims to curb extra muni meter costs
City Council Speaker Christine Quinn announced Wednesday that she and her colleagues will take up a bill that reforms the payment system for muni-meters.
Quinn, who is running for mayor, said too many drivers mistakenly pay for fees, because the meters remain on after the paid parking times end.
"Whether you're doing your laundry or parking your car, you should always get what you pay for," she said in a statement.
The bill, that is co-sponsored by Councilman James Vacca and will be introduced next week, mandates that the muni-meters are deactivated during when parking rules aren't in effect, and not accept payments when the machine is out of paper for receipts.
A spokesman for Mayor Michael Bloomberg said his office is reviewing the bill.
