City elevator key eBay page taken down
No one is going to get their hands on the real keys to the city.
The retired New Jersey locksmith took down his eBay posting Sunday for a "firemen's key ring" that allegedly could be used on various circuit breakers, elevators and lamps throughout New York, according to a source.
The locksmith sold some of the keys to a reporter for the New York Post -- which first reported the story -- and caused great concern among city officials. A spokesman for the mayor's office said the sale is being investigated by the Fire Marshal.
The FDNY didn't return messages for comment.
Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, however, said the authorities should have caught the posting earlier and demanded better oversight by the police.
"The billions we've spent on counterterrorism have been severely undercut by this breech," he said in a statement.
