City prepares for Fleet Week of partying
As sailors descend on the city Wednesday for Fleet Week — an unofficial kickoff to the summer in Gotham — many are hoping to make a splash in the singles scene.
“The ratio of men to women changes finally in women’s favor,” said dating expert Andrea Syrtash, author of “He’s Just Not Your Type (and That's a Good Thing).” “Everyone’s in vacation mode. Inhibitions are down, especially if you’re single and you’re up for just having a fun time.”
Even Paris Hilton, who knows a thing or two about partying, will be in town Wednesday to host a “Songs for Soldiers” event in Union Square. The socialite is trying to secure MP3 players for all U.S. troops.
New Yorkers are also at the ready. “It’s the most wonderful time of the year,” one tweeted Tuesday. “Can’t wait to see my first sailor,” another chimed in.
Not all of Fleet Week is about snagging a uniformed man. Here are some of the free festivities on deck for New Yorkers:
* The Parade of Ships starts at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Ships that will make its way north on the Hudson include the assault ship USS Iwo Jima.
* A Broadway showcase featuring performances from the Great White Way. 2 p.m. Friday at Pier 86, 46th Street and 12th Avenue.
* Tug-O-War with military members, firefighters, sports mascots. Noon Saturday at the Intrepid Pier.
* A Memorial Day celebration with three-volley salute. 11 a.m. Monday at the Intrepid Pier.
