Facebook friends with your boss? Not so fast
Did your boss friend you on Facebook? That could someday be illegal in New York.
The City Council Wednesday held a hearing on an online privacy bill that would bar potential employers from demanding passwords and access to your Facebook account and other personal online spaces.
"I was deeply concerned to learn that employers were demanding access to private social media accounts as a way to screen job applicants," said Council Member Annabel Palma (D-Bronx), who introduced the bill.
"While there is much that is public about these and other online accounts, they contain a great deal of sensitive information," Palma said. "An individual should not have to sacrifice a job to keep this information private. I believe this bill provides an important protection for employees in the 21st century."
Some states have passed laws that ban potential employers and schools from asking for Facebook passwords and other personal information online.
