Facebook is jumping on the hashtag bandwagon.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Facebook is in the process of incorporating hashtags into its design.

The hashtag has long been iconic to Facebook rival Twitter, where it is used to track and organize conversation about a topic. Once integrated into Facebook, the hashtag may allow users to index interactions in ways that mimic Twitter’s user interface.

Instagram, Facebook’s recently acquired photo-sharing site already uses hashtags to organize pictures. The addition of hashtags to Facebook’s main site may be part of an effort to create a more consistent user experience on all Facebook features.

But users will have to wait for hashtags to become part of Facebook's service.

“It is unclear how far along Facebook's work on the hashtag is and the feature isn't being introduced imminently,” sources told WSJ.
