Falling tree crushes and kills Flushing man: Officials
Hurricane Sandy claimed its first life in New York City on Monday night when a tree fell and crushed a man in his Queens home, officials said.
The unidentified man, who was reported to be 30 years old, was killed just before 7:30 p.m. when a tree fell and hit him, the NYPD and FDNY said. An NYPD spokesman said it appeared the man was in his Flushing home at 47-34 166th Street at the time.
Earlier in the day, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said there were no reported fatalities related to the storm, though there had been at least two injuries from falling trees as Hurricane Sandy made its way toward the city.
