Family of Tyler Clementi may sue Rutgers for his suicide
Rutgers University could be sued by the family of Tyler Clementi, the freshman who killed himself after his roommate allegedly streamed his gay encounter on the Web.
The notice of claim was filed Dec. 17 to preserve the right of Clementi’s family to sue, their attorney Paul Mainardi said in a statement yesterday.
Clementi, 18, jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge in September after his roommate, Dharun Ravi, allegedly used a webcam to broadcast Clementi kissing another man.
The case cast a national spotlight on cyber bullying and the struggles of gay teens.
Ravi and freshman Molly Wei were charged with invasion of privacy.
In a statement, Rutgers expressed sympathy with the family but rejected responsibility for his death.
The school understands “that a grieving family may question whether someone or some institution could somehow have responsibility for their son’s death,” the statement said, concluding that ”the university is not responsible for Tyler Clementi’s suicide.”
