Fantasy football: Painting the fantasy picture by numbers
Numbers – they’re the lifeblood of fantasy football. And yet, not everyone who plays the game digs deep into the statistics. Doing a little extra homework could yield some discoveries that not only shape your opinion about a player’s chances for success in the upcoming season, it could also give you a leg up on the competition.
Here are some numbers to consider before drafting your team. (All stats are for standard-scoring leagues.)
Fantasy points Michael Vick averaged last season in the 11 games in which he attempted at least 11 passes. By comparison, Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers averaged 19.6 points.
Games in which Baltimore wide receiver Anquan Boldin scored two or fewer fantasy points in 2010.
Yards Houston quarterback Matt Schaub averaged over the final six games of 2010. He also threw 10 touchdowns and finished as the fourth-best fantasy QB during that span.
Chargers wide receiver Malcom Floyd's fantasy ranking among wide receivers in 2009, the last full season when he and Vincent Jackson teamed up.
Receptions Miami's Brandon Marshall amassed over the past four seasons despite playing for two different teams, for three different head coaches and with three different starting quarterbacks.
Games in which New England tight end Rob Gronkowski caught two or fewer passes last season.
Passing yards Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who was suspended for four games, was on pace to reach had he played a full 16-game schedule last season. Think that's a fluke? In 2009, Big Ben threw for 4,328 yards in 15 games.
Consecutive years that Oakland's Sebastian Janikowski failed to crack the top 17 in fantasy scoring among kickers before finishing second last season.
Rushing yards averaged by Tampa Bay's LeGarrette Blount in the 11 games in which he had at least 11 carries. Over the course of 16 games, that would have amounted to 1,421 yards.
Touchdown passes Rams quarterback Sam Bradford threw over the final five weeks of 2010. He also threw six interceptions and had a passer rating of just 63.4 during that span.
