Final Columbia U. student involved in drug ring pleads guilty
The last of five Columbia University students busted for running a drug ring out of frat houses and on-campus apartments took a plea deal Tuesday and avoided jail time.
Adam Klein, 21, pleaded guilty to attempted criminal possession of a controlled substance in Manhattan Supreme Court. Investigators from the city's special narcotics prosecutor's office said he sold LSD to an undercover cop in November, 2010, and was found with LSD when cops raided the group's stash the following month.
Under the plea deal, Klein will face five years probation and must complete drug rehab. Without the deal, he could have been sentenced to up to nine years behind bars if convicted.
His lawyer, Alan Abramson, told amNewYork Klein was already seeking therapy for drug addiction. Abramson said he would ask a judge to seal Klein’s record at a sentencing hearing next month.
