Fire evacuates Macy's on big shopping day
A fire broke out at Macy’s flagship store Sunday at the height of the shopping season, with hundreds of customers having to be evacuated because of heavy smoke.
The fire started just after 4 p.m.in the escalator leading between the third and forth floors of the Herald Square store. The store’s classic wooden escalators were not involved in the fire, a spokeswoman said. The store has since reopened.
The Fire Department reported no injuries. The store would not comment on how the fire would impact sales, or if merchandise was damaged.
