Fulton transit center roof catches fire
FDNY Monday extinquished a fire on the roof of the Fulton Street transit center currently being constructed.
The fire broke out in the $1.4 billion project's dome roof, called the oculus, around 1:30 p.m., according to the FDNY. The all-hands fire brought 12 units to the scene and was under control shortly before 3 p.m.
Kevin Ortiz, an MTA spokesman, said that the fire was apparently "caused by some welding that was being done and a couple of sparks touched some insulation."
Five firefighters suffered heat-related injuries from battling the blaze in afternoon heat that reached into the 90s.
