How the stars rang in 2011, from Jay-Z to Kim Kardashian
Stars ring in new year with Jay-Z and Coldplay
The new Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas was the place to be on New Year's Eve. Celebs headed en masse to the hotel's first (and highly anticipated concert): a collaboration between Jay-Z and Coldplay. Coldplay kicked off the night with a 12-song set (which included "Yellow," "Viva La Vida" and "Clocks"), and Jay-Z took over after midnight struck. But the two weren't the only ones to hit the stage: Kanye West, Beyoncé and John Mayer all made surprise appearances. Beyonce joined her hubby on stage for "Young Forever," and "continued to wow the crowd, bringing Coldplay frontman Chris Martin back out for an acoustic duet of her hit, 'Halo,'" a source told us. West accompanied Jay-Z on three songs, while Mayer played guitar for "99 Problems." Rihanna and Diddy came by to party with Jay-Z and Beyoncé and Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow, who all held court at a center table with a view of the Las Vegas Strip, another source said. Meanwhile, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony took over a table with 25 friends and family members and "danced up a storm with pal Leah Remini," the source added. Also there: Alex Rodriguez and girlfriend Cameron Diaz, Kellan Lutz (who donned a black eye mask to hide from the Twi-hards lined up outside, according to our spy), 50 Cent, Mark Wahlberg and wife Rhea Durham, Jeremy Piven, Ashley Olsen and BF Justin Bartha, Jared Leto and "Gossip" gals Blake Lively and Jessica Szohr.
Lauryn Hill misses midnight at Gansevoort
Notoriously tardy Lauryn Hill kept the crowd at Gansevoort Park Avenue waiting for two hours before she performed, starting her concert at 12:30 a.m. on Jan. 1 instead of 10:30 p.m. on New Year's Eve. But once she hit the stage, “she didn’t fail to deliver as she rocked her biggest hits,” including "Lost Ones" and "To Zion," a source told us. Since Hill wasn't there in time to ring in 2011, Tyrese Gibson counted down before a celeb-filled audience that included Dylan McDermott and Gina Gershon.
Kim Kardashian debuts single at NYE bash
Reality star, store owner, fashion "designer" and now-singer Kim Kardashian took New Year's Eve as an opportunity to debut her upcoming single to an attentive crowd. While hosting a bash at Tao Las Vegas, Kardashian sang her tune, "Turn It Up" — a dance track produced by The Dream. "The crowd wanted an encore, but Kim only played it once with the DJ," a spy said. Meanwhile, Kim's older sister, Kourtney, partied at the Gansevoort Miami Beach.
Bruno Mars does NYE Times Square-style
Bruno Mars couldn’t have asked for a more perfect New York-style way to ring in 2011. The singer performed an intimate concert at the R Lounge at the Renaissance Times Square, which had a perfect view of the ball drop. We were lucky enough to swing by the party — and to hear Mars’ knockout vocals as he belted out “Billionaire” and “Just the Way You Are,” as well as several covers. Our favorite? A mash-up of “Billy Jean” and “Smells Like Teen Spirit." Then, on New Year's Day, Mars traveled cross-country to perform at Haze Nightclub at Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. After the concert, Mars chatted with Rihanna and "Glee" star Mark Salling in the VIP section. "They clinked glasses, toasting to the new year," a spy said.
Nelly gets 'lots' of New Year's kisses from GF Ashanti
Also in Vegas for NYE was Nelly, who hosted a bash at Haze. The crowd went wild as the rapper performed "Hot in Herre," "Country Grammar" and other hits before he camped out at a VIP table with his 25-person entourage, which included girlfriend Ashanti. “She was sipping champagne, playing with festive confetti canisters and giving Nelly lots of New Year’s Eve kisses,” a spy told us. How cute!
