In grand ceremony, Yankees retire Mariano Rivera's number
After a career of unparalleled success in finishing games, Mariano Rivera stood out before the start of one yesterday. He stood in Monument Park, a few steps from the Yankees’ bullpen, and received a massive standing ovation as his No. 42 officially was retired by his team.
So the most famous and accomplished closer in baseball history thus closed out his farewell tour in grand style, before a gathering of personal friends, teammates, Yankees officials and a packed house in Yankee Stadium.
He said goodbye after having walked in from the bullpen, serenaded with a live rendition of his entrance song, “Enter Sandman,” by the group Metallica, which recorded it. MORE
