Jay-Z officially certified as MLB, NBA agent
Jay-Z’s list of titles continues to expand.
The rap mogul on Thursday was certified as an NBA and MLB player agent, adding to his ever-growing resume. Jay-Z founded sports management company Roc Nation Sports in April, and his team so far has signed Yankees star Robinson Cano and Jets quarterback Geno Smith to the agency.
Now Jay-Z will be able to directly represent MLB and NBA players. ESPN reported that although his status as minority owner of the Nets would prohibit him from signing players, he may still be able to proceed as long as he agrees to sell his stake in the team in the near future.
NBA superstar forward Kevin Durant will be the first basketball player to sign with Jay-Z, according to ESPN.
The “Otis” rapper has not had the same smooth sailing with the NFL as the MLB and NBA. He met with the NFLPA on Wednesday to discuss whether Roc Nation Sports had violated the union’s “runner rule,” which says that only agents can recruit prospective player clients. Jay-Z, who is not certified by the NFL, was seen pictured with Smith before he signed with Roc Nation Sports.
